My response to ‘In Real Life’ revolves around the experience of three generations of British Indians. I have used a combination of appropriated imagery from my Mother’s return to India in 1993 to visit where her family are from, and my own images from my own journey there 25 years later.
I have incorporated photomontage inspired by John Stezaker and Ed Ruscha, combining the images to tell the narrative of our family’s journey and experiences. This involves returning to sites of cultural and religious significance and responding to the landscape. I now live in a very rural part of Wales and wanted to respond to the area in which our family now resides. I have also incorporated elements of self-portraiture to further reflect my own connection to the work and the narrative of the project.
